Let’s be honest: in 2026, the “big wedding” is taking a backseat to something much more intentional. Couples are trading 200-person guest lists for the “Main Character energy” of a city hall elopement. And if you’re looking for the most beautiful, European-inspired backdrop in Ontario, a Cambridge City Hall weddings in the historic Galt district is the move.
As a photographer with nearly a decade of experience, I’ve seen it all—but there is a specific kind of magic that happens in Cambridge. It’s the limestone walls, the cobblestone streets, and the way the light hits the Grand River at sunset. It’s effortless, it’s timeless, and it’s arguably the most “Instagrammable” spot in the province.
In this guide, I’m breaking down everything you need to know to plan your micro wedding in Cambridge—from the legal logistics to the best post-ceremony espresso martinis.

Before we get to the pretty photos, we have to handle the paperwork. Cambridge has made the process fairly seamless for modern couples.
Civil ceremonies are typically performed at the Historic City Hall (46 Dickson St.). Unlike big venues, you don’t book years in advance, but you do need to be organized.
Staying budget-conscious doesn’t mean skipping out on style. Here is what you can expect to pay for a City Hall package this year:
Note: These fees are subject to HST, but compared to a $10,000 venue rental, it’s a total steal. See City of Cambridge website for up to date pricing on Cambridge City Hall Weddings.

One of the reasons I love a Cambridge City Hall weddings is the architectural variety. You aren’t stuck in a windowless room; you’re in a building with a soul.
For the couple that loves history, this is it. Think high ceilings, original wood detailing, and that “Old World” authority. It feels serious in the best way possible—like you’re becoming part of the building’s 150-year history.
If your vibe is “bright and airy,” the Atrium is your best friend. It’s modern, filled with natural light, and acts as a giant softbox for your photos. For my true-to-color style, this room is a dream because it keeps skin tones looking clean and vibrant.

This is where being in Cambridge really pays off. You don’t need a permit for a secondary location because the most beautiful spots are all within a 5-minute walk of City Hall.
This is the “shot.” Standing on the bridge with the historic church steeples and the river behind you gives major European city vibes. It’s iconic, it’s romantic, and it looks incredible in a wedding gallery.
Just across the water, you’ll find the stone ruins of Mill Race Park. The textures of the old limestone walls against the flowing water create a “ruins of Italy” look that is unmatched in Ontario. It’s the perfect spot for your family formals or your first sunset portraits as a married couple.
For an editorial, high-fashion edge, we head to the Gaslight District. The industrial architecture, the wide-open square, and the chic storefronts provide a “New York City” vibe that balances out the historic charm of Galt.
This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the country. The limestone exterior and the massive clock tower are the perfect backdrop for those “effortless” walking shots that I love to capture.

The best part about a micro wedding? You can actually afford to take your 20 guests to a top-tier restaurant. Galt has become a culinary destination, and these are my personal favorites for a post-wedding meal:
| Restaurant | The Vibe | Best For… |
| Cambridge Mill | Riverside luxury, historic charm, 5-star service. | The ultimate high-end wedding dinner. |
| Foundry Tavern | Modern, industrial, gastropub energy. | A fun, vibe-y atmosphere in the Gaslight District. |
| Old Galt Bottle Shop | Rustic, intimate, and very “cool girl.” | A private buyout for 20-40 guests who love craft beer and snacks. |
| Blackshop Restaurant | Sophisticated, timeless, incredible wine list. | A classic, elegant sit-down dinner for small groups. |
Even if you’re “just” eloping at City Hall, you deserve a beautiful space to get ready. Lighting is everything for your morning-of photos!
Do we need witnesses?
Yes, you need two witnesses. If you are eloping “just the two of you,” the City Hall staff can often act as witnesses for a small fee of $35 each.
Is there parking nearby?
Yes! There is a large public lot right across from City Hall and plenty of street parking in Galt. I always recommend the Dickson Street lot for easy access.
Can we do photos inside City Hall?
Usually, your ceremony booking includes time for photos in the room where you were married. However, the real magic happens outside in the Galt district, where no permits are required for street photography!
What is the best time of year for a Cambridge wedding?
Galt is stunning year-round. The limestone looks incredible against autumn leaves, but the “European” vibe is also very romantic in the winter when the Gaslight District is lit up with holiday lights.

After nearly a decade as an Ontario wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the best photos happen when you feel relaxed and comfortable. I’m not here to put you in stiff, awkward poses. I’m here to wander the streets of Galt with you, capturing the real, authentic moments of your day in a true-to-color style that will look just as good in fifty years as it does today.
If you’re planning a micro wedding in Cambridge and want someone who knows all the hidden limestone corners and the best lighting on the Grand River, I’d love to be there.
